Educators and education experts around the world have expressed concern about the "potential for cheating" that ChatGPT possesses. Some institutions decided to block access to the chatbot, but the genie is already out of the bottle, and ChatGPT-based tools keep multiplying. One of the latest examples is ChatPDF, which allows us to "talk" to a book or text, ask questions, get a summary, compare details, and much more.
I must confess that I hated every book I was forced to read in high school, without exception. That feeling was shared by many students from different courses, and some went as far as buying a summary to avoid reading. Today we find platforms entirely dedicated to providing those... services, but with the entry of ChatGPT into the battlefield, their days are likely numbered.
As if that were not enough, users and developers alike are finding different ways to bend the chatbot's rules and do amazing things. Previously we have seen how to connect it to the web and hold a conversation using the microphone, but today it's ChatPDF's turn. As its name suggests, ChatPDF lets us upload a PDF document and, from a certain point of view, "talk" to it.
How to "Talk" to Your Books and Documents with ChatPDF
Due to high demand, ChatPDF has an artificial ceiling of 200 pages, more than enough to closely study all kinds of documents, essays, contracts, papers, and short books (if you want more, you can use your own key). ChatPDF analyzes the PDF to create a semantic index, and the rest of the heavy lifting is left to the ChatGPT API.
One of ChatPDF's main limitations is its inability to understand images, so it will not be able to correctly answer questions that depend on their content. Another detail focuses on privacy: all documents will remain stored on ChatPDF's server for seven days before being automatically deleted.
To finish, the same old warning: ChatPDF is not perfect. Our test inspired by Isaac Asimov's "The Last Question" started off on the right foot, but it didn't take long to invent some names and forget others. Don't hesitate to try it!
