A couple of months ago we discussed Monitorian, an open source tool for controlling the brightness of multiple monitors at once, but we are glad to report that it is not the only one with that profile. We recently came across Twinkle Tray, which can extend its influence to contrast and power parameters, schedule special keyboard shortcuts, and change brightness automatically based on time of day.
Control the brightness of your monitors with Twinkle Tray
A poorly calibrated monitor can lead to headaches, eye irritation or fatigue, and of course, ruined projects. However, professional monitor calibration tools remain at prohibitive prices, leaving us with one option: work with the classic controls until we get acceptable results. In many cases, a monitor only needs a brightness adjustment, and the good news is that we can easily control that value via software, with tools like Twinkle Tray.
As its name suggests, Twinkle Tray works with the system tray, where it stays in the background. A click on its icon will open the main menu, loaded with options for all detected screens. Twinkle Tray depends on DDC/CI support, and if one of your screens was not registered correctly, you should check in its internal settings whether DDC/CI is active or available.
In the advanced section of Twinkle Tray you can enable additional parameters for each monitor, for example, contrast control and software-based power off. You will also see options like starting with Windows, and applying the last brightness value during startup, but the most interesting part is in the Schedule Settings menu. There you can program different brightness levels according to the time of day, and separate the configuration per monitor, or apply it globally.
Finally, Twinkle Tray will allow you to assign special keyboard shortcuts to increase or decrease brightness, turn off the monitors (this is not a bad idea), and define the brightness percentage for each step (between 1 and 30 percent). Twinkle Tray is free, open source, and is also available on the Microsoft Store if you prefer to go that route.
