Connectivity, package delivery, races… the potential of drones goes far beyond the news about people shooting them down with shotguns. With the right combination of hardware and software, a drone can become a very useful ally for architects and engineers working on large-scale projects, including houses, buildings, and other installations. That's where the new Parrot Bebop 2 Real Estate Advanced Edition and the Pix4D digitization program come in.
Are you planning to renovate the exterior of your home? Do you need to modify a warehouse or remodel a larger space? In those cases, the “before and after” reference can be very useful, but the process of capturing dozens of images quickly becomes tedious, not to mention that climbing onto rooftops isn’t always a viable option. Of course, these difficulties are nothing for a drone equipped with a camera. While a small video should be enough, the people at Parrot have decided to go one step further with a new platform that combines one of its most recent drones with a solid automatic 3D modeling tool.
On one hand we have the drone, called the Bebop 2 Real Estate Advanced Edition. It features a 14-megapixel camera with a fisheye lens, GPS, image stabilization, integrated dual-core processor, WiFi ac connectivity, 8 gigabytes of internal storage, and 25 minutes of autonomy. The other half of the equation is the Pix4D software, which automatically digitizes the building of our choice. Controlling the flight pattern on the drone is very simple, and once we obtain the required data, it is uploaded to Pix4D’s servers, where the rendering process takes place. As an example, the Bebop 2 took 74 photos in 12 minutes for a building 80 meters long.
The Parrot Bebop 2 Real Estate Advanced Edition comes ready to use, and the Pix4D license lasts one year. Clearly, we are looking at one of the most interesting options in Parrot’s catalog, however, it is not what you’d call cheap. At this moment, the official page announces a price of 900 dollars.
