Quantum computing is a development that could change the world of computer science forever. The theory promises a drastic increase in performance compared to traditional supercomputers, but we cannot deny that quantum computing is still in its infancy. Despite that, Google and NASA have decided to extend their contract with D-Wave, a decision that gives them access to the new D-Wave 2X, with double the power of the previous system.

Every new piece of technology must undergo some evaluation process, and sooner or later specific studies question its benefits. Quantum computers have not escaped this, leading to June of last year. At that time, a report published jointly by Google, Microsoft Research, and at least two universities determined that the speed benefits of a quantum system simply were not there. The response from D-Wave, the manufacturer of the computer under test, was quick, calling the study "garbage". After such statements, anyone might think the relationship would break. However, both Google and NASA, along with the NSRA, decided to extend their contract with D-Wave for seven more years.

This means the Mountain View giant and the rest of the team will obtain the new D-Wave 2X, a model that doubles the capacity of the previous generation. Up to this point, a D-Wave computer could process 512 qubits, but the D-Wave 2X raises that number to more than 1,000 qubits, operating at an extraordinarily low temperature (just 15 millikelvins). The agreement also establishes that Google, NASA, and the NSRA will receive any updated version of the computer during the contract period, though the exact sum that makes this possible has not been disclosed.

Why continue this line of research if there are so many doubts about its benefits? Precisely, because of the doubts. Experts are still unsure how to accurately and effectively measure the performance of a quantum computer. Google believes the potential of quantum platforms for developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning is enormous, while NASA's plan is to apply that same potential to space exploration. The D-Wave 2X represents a new seven-year adventure that could change the landscape of computing forever, or perhaps lead to something even better.
