At some point, the PlayStation 2 seemed impossible to emulate. It was called "more complex", "too demanding", and "very different from the PS1". But the history of emulation is always the same: with patience, dedication, and resources, every platform falls. DamonPS2 PRO is one of the latest examples, running on Android devices.
From what I've gathered, a used PlayStation 2 in good condition has an average price of 50 euros. There are also gamepads, memory cards, and a long list of accessories to improve the experience. Mods are another interesting aspect, allowing you to reproduce titles from a hard drive (at least on the original "fat" edition) and bypass the optical drive. However, if you already own a computer with enough firepower, you can leave that aside and adopt an emulator with PCSX2 at the forefront. Now, what about mobile devices? They have gained many resources in recent years and are increasingly fast. Apple has a historical war with emulators, but one of the most recent entries in the Android space is DamonPS2 PRO.
Requirements and Compatibility
To run DamonPS2 Pro successfully, install it on an Android device with version 5.1 or higher and minimum OpenGL ES 3.1 support. You also need a copy of the PS2 BIOS (which we obviously won't provide), and of course, get the game images. The official text (in overly broken English that betrays its Chinese origin) suggests that more than 90 percent of the 13,000 PS2 games work without problems in DamonPS2... which is surprising because the official PS2 library doesn't exceed 2,600 titles (combining the US, Europe, and Japan). In terms of performance, some games manage to flirt with 60 FPS, but in most cases they average 15-30 FPS, and audio sync drops are frequent. In the advanced emulator options, there are several parameters to adjust its behavior, and with a bit of luck, extract more speed.
A Work in Progress
DamonPS2 PRO is definitely a work in progress, which is why I used the term "functional" in the title. Patience will be key, but not everything is perfect. First, the developers want $10 for the full edition of the emulator. The free build is supposed to be available starting in February, with built-in ads and some limitations. And second, I came across serious news: PCSX2 developers openly accused DamonPS2 PRO of stealing code and violating GPL. This could cause DamonPS2 PRO to disappear from the Play Store in the short term, so if you're going to try it, I recommend you hurry.
