Having a solid and spacious desk can make a huge difference when we spend countless hours in front of the screen, whether working or gaming. Of course, aesthetics matter too, but before you invest money blindly, why not design it? The folks at DeskSpacing offer free access to a "workspace simulator" where you can experiment with different elements (from monitor size to audio system) and create your ideal place.
I think we all spend more hours in front of the monitor than we'd like to admit, and one way or another, we need to achieve some level of comfort. Some users can throw a lot of money at the 'problem' and create true battle stations that leave us speechless, while another significant group (to which I belong) follows the path of improvisation and creativity, modifying and/or adapting furniture until we find a satisfactory solution.
But what happens when we're in a middle ground? That is, willing to renew our desk without going to the extreme of a full battlestation. The folks at DeskSpacing have a proposal: Design it in 3D! Just as PC Building Simulator lets you visualize a high-end computer before buying the parts, this simulator does the same for our workspace.
How to design your own 3D space with DeskSpacing
The commands are very simple: Use the mouse to rotate the camera, Shift+Click to move it, and the mouse wheel controls zoom. The R key switches between move and rotate for objects, X-Y-Z enable and disable the corresponding axes, Backspace deletes a selected object, + and - changes the size of the controls, and C disables them to take screenshots. The tutorial indicates that with Ctrl+Shift+S we can get a screenshot, but it didn't work during my tests.
The available object categories are desks, monitors, keyboards, mice, mousepads, audio equipment and speakers, laptops, towers, and secondary items like lights and coffee mugs. Personally, I'd like to see a more precise "snap" control and for objects to recognize the desk surface (they can get embedded), but overall I must admit it works very well, and I hope that in the future they incorporate additional designs, or why not, turn the whole environment into a standalone app.
