Everyone talks about the “perfect photo” – that single shot that needs nothing extra… but in practice, a project can demand hundreds of shots, and sooner or later we have to organize them. That's where digiKam comes in, a free and open source tool that helps you transfer, view, sort, classify, and export all sorts of images, videos, and RAW files.
How many photos do you have stored on your computer? During my years in technical support, I've seen hard drives with tens of thousands of captures – entire years of parties and vacations, scattered in folders with strange names or half-sorted... and of course, with no backup at all. If you think it's time to manage your images but the idea of doing it manually worries you, maybe you should give digiKam a chance. At first glance it's not an app for beginners, but I guarantee it's worth your time.
How to manage and edit images with digiKam
The broad import support in digiKam lets us transfer photos, RAW files, and videos directly from our cameras or external devices (think USB drives, SD cards, or portable disks), as well as set strict rules for that material to be automatically organized.
The tagging tools in digiKam deserve a mention: with them we can assign tags and rating values to our creations. This is especially useful for searching: the built-in engine is powerful on its own, but its potential multiplies when combined with any extra data we've loaded into our photos.
Fortunately, the editing tools don't lag behind. If you're thinking about cropping, adjusting colors, applying sharpening, tweaking curves, and stitching panoramic photos, digiKam won't disappoint. Personally, I really enjoy the border generator for images, which is very easy to use and has a healthy number of presets. From a certain point of view, digiKam's editor is a “Paint.NET on steroids”, and you should definitely check it out.
Plugins, advanced tools for red-eye removal, export to online services (Flickr, Google Drive, Dropbox – you pick), and more than 15 years of development make digiKam a program that has nothing to envy from commercial solutions. The latest version at the time of writing is 7.7.0, which adds support for additional cameras (more than 1,100 RAW cameras are already included) and fixes over 80 bugs from previous builds.
