Human beings have shown that they can accumulate (in the good sense) practically anything. Some collections have become invaluable historical records over time, and one of the most striking examples is David Rumsey's private cartographic collection. With more than 90,000 pieces, it is the largest of its kind on the planet, and today we can download a large part of its content in high definition.
David Rumsey began his collection during the 1980s, when he was president of the publishing company Cartography Associates. At first he concentrated his efforts on the United States, accumulating pieces from the 16th century onward. However, he eventually expanded to star charts, pictorial maps, maritime illustrations, and much more.

The official site divides the content into hundreds of categories, themselves divided into four general groups: "What", "Where", "Who", and "When". Do you want a map of Madrid? You'll have to do a little scrolling to find its section, but the collection holds dozens of maps of that city, some of them very old.
All downloads are carried out with the Export function, after clicking on a map. The images we share here are medium-low resolution, but if you want larger pieces, you can choose the "extra-extra Large" parameter, with a maximum of 12288 pixels per side. Now, that doesn't mean all maps exist at that resolution. In fact, some don't even allow export (unresolved copyright details, perhaps?), but there is plenty of material to work with.
