Dubai police are investigating new and innovative ways to fight crime and protect the public. This police force has now begun testing flying motorcycles that will hopefully become part of its high-tech patrol fleet. The concept of a flying motorcycle (or hoverbike, as many prefer) seems straight out of a Hollywood science-fiction movie; the most obvious comparison is with the 74-Z speeder bike used by Imperial soldiers in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. Developed by the Russian company Hoversurf, the flying motorcycle was unveiled at Gitex Technology Week, Dubai’s most popular annual technology fair. This vehicle runs on electricity, can reach an altitude of five meters, and can carry a police officer during emergency situations and heavy traffic. With a pilot, the flying motorcycle can stay airborne for 25 minutes, reach up to 70 km/h, and carry up to 300 kg of weight. According to statements by First Sergeant Ali Ahmad Mohammad of the VIP Security Department of Dubai police, it can apparently also fly without a human pilot on board and can climb up to 6 meters in height. In that case, the motorcycle is controlled via a remote control.
The flying motorcycle can move without a pilot thanks to a system equipped to detect obstacles and anomalies while in the air. According to the manufacturers, this futuristic motorcycle has passed successful tests in extreme conditions of dust and heat. The flying motorcycle is currently in the testing phase, and soon Dubai police will begin using them in the city.
