Discovering new worlds is a dream for many, but that doesn't mean we have to go 'out there' to find them. With the help of an electron microscope, it's possible to reveal details we could never have imagined in everyday objects. Shapes, curves, folds, bumps, crystals, chaos, symmetry... true alien landscapes. The folks at ZEISS Microscopy have shared dozens of images on their official Flickr profile, and today we'll see the most striking ones.
The images were created by Todd Simpson of the Western Nanofabrication Facility at the University of Western Ontario. Some of the photos in the original gallery date back to 2005, but they are no less amazing. Things you use and touch every day, that you consume with your food, that you wear and discard... once under the microscope, they are a universe in themselves.
