The fighting game genre has grown increasingly complex over the years. Returning to its roots, Sirlin Games has unveiled Fantasy Strike, a new fighting game that promises to do away with the traditional complexity of the genre to reach a broader audience.
The independent studio Sirlin Games, led by David Sirlin (designer of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix), has introduced Fantasy Strike for PlayStation 4, a new 1-on-1 fighting game that promises to eliminate the genre's usual complexity to welcome more players. The game emphasizes simple controls and easy handling for those unfamiliar with fighting games. Fighter movements are reduced to a single button—whether attacking, jumping, or performing a special move—or combining two buttons for a powerful attack. In fact, characters don't even crouch, making movement even simpler.
Throws Are Back
One of the most recurring features in fighting games is the throw. It used to be a powerful tool, but after years of players complaining that throws were a cheap trick, developers gradually reduced their effectiveness. Throws are back in Fantasy Strike and will be quite powerful, but their effectiveness can be countered simply by not touching anything. If you do that, you'll be vulnerable to any attack, but if your opponent attempts to throw you while you're not pressing the controls, your character will counter it, inflicting damage instead.

Currently Fantasy Strike features eight of the ten original characters from the Yomi card game. Among these diverse characters are a ninja, a panda, and a fish, who besides mastering martial arts use the elements (wind and fire), ghosts, and even time itself as weapons. The intention is to add more characters and modes, including online matches via GGPO network technology. Fantasy Strike is being developed by Sirlin Games and will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4. The game doesn't have a concrete release date but will be present at PlayStation Experience, Sony's themed event held in early December 2016.
