Free 3D Architecture Programs

In the old days, architects drew their plans by hand, but today, if you step into an architecture studio, you'll no longer find drafting boards but computers loaded with various 3D architecture programs. This paradigm shift has made the process of creating a plan faster and simpler. That's why we present five free and alternative 3D architecture programs.

The listed platforms are also powerful, completely free BIM programs. BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools incorporate a data layer into drawings, making it easier to produce coherent architectural designs. They are clearly alternatives to the most well-known and used programs.

SketchUp

SketchUp is, without a doubt, one of the best 3D architecture and BIM platforms. What makes SketchUp one of the best options on this list is the ability to add a large number of extensions to enhance its features. For example, PlusSpec adds comprehensive BIM functions to the 3D architecture program.

TAD (The Architect's Desktop)

TAD is a free BIM program. Its code is currently closed, but developers assure that in the next version (we are currently on version 6) its code will be open. What stands out about the tool is that it emphasizes the engineering aspect but neglects the conceptual aspect of architectural design. For this reason, the program is recommended for architects with advanced knowledge (without achieving detail design).

B-processor

B-processor is a BIM program developed by the School of Architecture of Arhus (Denmark) in cooperation with the Alexandra Institute. Its interface is very intuitive, as it was designed to start an architectural design from scratch. We highlight that all its modeling views are reproduced in 3D, not in 2D like its competitors.

Dynamo

Dynamo belongs to the new generation of 3D architecture programs (it relates well to Revit) that can reproduce designs (through programming) based on a set of relevant parameters. Surely when you read the word “programming” you got scared, but don't worry, you won't have to write lines of code. You simply have to combine nodes that represent code in a graphical interface. FreeCAD Arch

FreeCAD Arch is a program designed around parametric modeling. From its interface you can design real-life elements in 3D, including buildings. Thanks to its modular design, you can add different features to the environment, including BIM capabilities. Another advantage of the service is that you can use all the features from other FreeCAD workbenches. Then you can convert these components into architectural objects while preserving all their modeling history.

With the five free 3D architecture and BIM programs, you'll have more than interesting options for your projects. They are not replacements for much more robust programs, but they are alternatives if you're looking for something different.
