Any search about the 4X genre inevitably leads us to classics like Civilization, Colonization and similar. Still, we must not forget that there are other projects with similar mechanics, and one of them is FreeOrion, an open source game that takes as inspiration the unforgettable Master of Orion. If the plan is to expand your galactic power and crush alien races, you should try this.
I invested entire months in the first Master of Orion. Then I did the impossible to get a copy of Master of Orion II, which I still proudly keep. Master of Orion III was an absolute disappointment, and the reboot of the saga called Conquer the Stars did not leave me satisfied. Some things are very well done, but in others the developers fell short, and beyond updates, players continue asking for additional content for what they see as a sterile galaxy, without identity or attitude. Obviously, these differences do not prevent other initiatives from being based on the original material, and that possibility leaves us at the gates of FreeOrion, an open source game that accumulates several years of development.

The official FreeOrion page explains that this game is not a clone nor a remake of the classic Master of Orion games, but rather based on its mechanics it seeks to present something as original and challenging as those titles. Logically, the learning curve in FreeOrion has no mercy with the player, and anyone interested must be willing to dedicate hours of their time just to master its basic concepts, from colonization and fleet movement to invasion of enemy planets and discovery of new technologies.
For now there are three victory conditions, but the two most important are to eradicate your opponents, or to discover the technology Singularity of Transcendence. After all, it wouldn't be a 4X in space if there weren't a way to ascend to a higher plane.
The development of FreeOrion is what can be called slow: for almost 10 years it has been in constant development, with an update in the past month of October 2020. The game still has many sharp edges, and its AI tends to have moments of madness. Despite everything, the project is made with sheer effort, and its entries on GitHub reveal that there are collaborators fixing bugs and balancing other aspects of the game. If the classics no longer satisfy you and you want a true challenge, FreeOrion could be a viable alternative.
