We've previously explored different extensions to modify YouTube's behavior and appearance, but if you think that's not enough, you can always explore the option of an alternative client. That brings us to FreeTube, an open-source development that enables advanced settings, download functions, and a much cleaner interface.
Our love-hate relationship with YouTube remains intact. Some channels are truly fabulous and deserve to be followed closely, but the rest of the platform tells another story. Its algorithm tries to keep us glued to the screen, and the recommendations hit the mark... once in a while. Add to that the inevitable collection of information, followed by the relentless bombardment.
Fortunately, there's another way to watch YouTube videos that lets us escape the algorithm's whims and the limitations of its interface. The price to pay is losing certain features like automatic subscription management and comments, but at the end of the day, I think it's worth it. The first step is to download a copy of the FreeTube client, which is free, open-source, and has a portable version.
Enjoy YouTube with more freedom through FreeTube
From a technical standpoint, FreeTube is similar to a wrapper, enabling the standard playback experience with a different wrapper. Special categories like “Trending” and the most popular videos are still there, but the best part is that we can load our subscriptions without a hitch. First, we must export them from YouTube by going to Google Takeout, then select YouTube in the list, and finally limit the export process to subscriptions. This creates a CSV file, which FreeTube registers with the Settings -> Data Settings -> Import Subscriptions option.
The player of FreeTube supports subtitles, downloads (with video and audio separately), loop, speed control, Picture-in-Picture, and cinema mode, but not all quality options are available (something quite common when changing codecs).
Beyond the occasional error during resolution adjustments and its roots as an Electron app, FreeTube works very well. Its advanced menu lets us enable five different interface themes, specify minimum resolutions and speed, obtain feeds via RSS, and of course, modify privacy values like remembering history and saving progress in a video.
