The best way to get to know and explore our sky is definitely to surrender to the night with a telescope and a lot of curiosity, but if you live in the middle of a city polluted by light or don't have time for those night sessions, there is always the software path. There are excellent tools to do it. However, today I would like to add to the project Gaia Sky developed by the Astronomy Center of the University of Heidelberg. Gaia Sky is free, open source, and very flexible thanks to its secondary modules.

I never “got” to the telescope. It's just one of many pending goals, and although more than one specialized portal recommends starting with a good pair of binoculars before making a larger investment, my 16-year-old self still wants a cannon pointing upward. Luckily, software has come to the rescue on several occasions. I enjoyed Stellarium, and I can't forget some tools to explore the sky that we saw in the past, but there is much more out there worth studying closely. One of those options is Gaia Sky, an astronomy platform developed by the Astronomy Center of the University of Heidelberg.

It all starts at home...

Where do we start? There is so much to see in Gaia Sky that its learning curve is a bit intimidating. The control panel on the left side of the screen presents camera parameters, visibility filters (that allow us to hide and reveal certain elements), visual settings to improve graphics quality, a complete list with available objects, and a music function that plays our own selection.

  • 6D Exploration: Observe star positions but also their movements and radial velocities.
  • Planetary surfaces: Explore surfaces with elevation maps.
  • Procedural planets: Generate planetary surfaces, clouds, and atmosphere.
  • Advanced graphics: Space reflections, shadows, HDR, dynamic resolution, ray marching distance fields, etc.
  • Planetarium projection mode: Real-time MPCDI for multi-projector systems. Capable of producing videos for domes.
  • Real-time filters: Filter by any dataset by distance, magnitude, galactic, elliptical, and equatorial coordinates, among others.
  • Expandable: Use Python to write and extend Gaia Sky's capabilities.

Additionally, Gaia Sky is compatible with 3D glasses and virtual reality headsets, supports gamepads to simplify navigation, and among the languages we find Spanish and Catalan.

Some options will make your sky burst with color

Getting the most out of Gaia Sky requires getting your hands a little dirty. The installer doesn't exceed 200 megabytes, which means we are forced to download the catalogs manually.

The Default edition delivers more than seven million stars in less than 800 megabytes, but enthusiasts might want to get the Large catalog, which weighs 9 gigabytes. The Extra Large version is a beast: More than 1.3 billion stars and 67 GB in size. Gaia Sky is compatible with Windows (32 and 64 bit), several flavors of Linux, and MacOS. Enjoy!
