GANimal: Transform Your Pet into Other Animals
GANimal

Setting aside some questionable decisions regarding pricing and features on its main products, the truth is that Nvidia has done solid work in the field of artificial intelligence. Its experiments reconstruct images, create human faces from nothing, and generate whole landscapes based on simple strokes. What comes next? Transforming pets, courtesy of the GANimal project. Upload a photo and watch the result...

Can you imagine your dog with rabbit ears? Or your fat, sleepy cat with a hippo face? These are delirious exercises the mind does with relative ease, but if left to a computer, they become a nightmare, unless an artificial intelligence intervenes, or a structure of generative adversarial networks, to be more precise. That brings us to Nvidia's territory: its AI experts have developed an algorithm called FUNIT (acronym for 'Few-shot, UNsupervised Image-to-image Translation'), which adds an extra twist to adversarial networks.

Under traditional models, an “image translator” of adversarial networks is trained to solve a specific task, say, converting horses to zebras. Instead, Nvidia's researchers trained their network to complete several translation tasks simultaneously, each processing a random “source animal” into another random “target animal”, taking as an example only a few images of the target animal.

After multiple sessions, the network learned to generalize its process, transforming known animals into animals it never saw before. Previously, network models for image translation received training based on multiple images of the target animal. Now, just one is enough.

Do you want to see this network in action? Today we have something better: an online demo. The GANimal project allows us to upload a photo of our pet and transform its face into 16 different animals. The image doesn't need anything special, just enough clarity to mark the face with a rectangle. Click the Translate button (as many times as you want) and enjoy the results. One of my lions (!) served as an example here. GANimal created from its face multiple dogs, a wolf, three bears, two cats, and a mongoose.
