Google made a particularly soft launch for its chatbot Bard in March. Access was very limited, and many regions were left out of the early experiments. But that's all in the past: In recent hours, the Mountain View giant confirmed the expansion of Bard to a large part of the European continent and Brazil, so we can now try it without difficulty.

After taking the web by storm and breaking every record along the way, ChatGPT experienced its first loss of users since its launch in November 2022. Deep down, no one is surprised: All hype loses momentum sooner or later, and users already know the chatbot's limitations very well.

Add to that the emergence of many competitors, and one of them is Google Bard. After a long wait, Mountain View's chatbot is ready for broader access, and although the beta label hasn't gone anywhere, the truth is it already has some very important advantages that place it a step above ChatGPT.

Pay attention to the terms...

Simpler is impossible: Go to the official Google Bard page, sign in with your Google account, accept the terms (pay attention to this), and start chatting. Personally, I recommend studying its terms of use closely: Google states that it may store various aspects of our activity in Bard, for an average of 18 months (you'll need to go here to reduce it to 90 days). In other words, don't expect private sessions in Bard. Big Brother is watching you.

Bard offers links, a positive point

Mountain View has indicated that Google Bard can speak Spanish, but this does not extend to all its functions (for example, if you want Bard to describe a photo, you'll receive the response in English). Still, the ability to work with images and include direct links as sources makes Google Bard a much more complete tool. Add to that internet access and the availability of up-to-date information (something essential in sports and entertainment).

But Google Bard is far from perfect. Moments of delirium are just around the corner (for example, it conjured a new designer for the Volksempfänger that it couldn't confirm afterwards), and I've also noticed performance details: Google Bard is slower than ChatGPT in providing responses, although I imagine that will be corrected over time.

... and this is what really surprised me: You can request images from Google Bard.

The rest will be a matter of seeing whether Bard can withstand the users' fire. On the surface, the chatbot has positive aspects that turn ChatGPT into a museum piece, but the road is very long, and we know well that long-term commitments aren't Google's strongest point...
