Google announced six Android Advanced Protection defenses for Android 17 on October 1, 2026. The device-level suite covers app access, intrusion logging, USB connections, WebGPU and repeated failed authentication; USB Protection and Failed Authentication Lock are available on selected Android 17 devices.
Google lists six Android 17 defenses
The six defenses are Intrusion Logging, USB Protection, Accessibility Protection, Disable WebGPU, Failed Authentication Lock and View Supporting Apps. Google launched Advanced Protection on Android 16 in 2025 and has since introduced enhancements to the suite. It is a device-level setting, separate from the Google Account Advanced Protection Program.
What Accessibility Protection restricts
When Advanced Protection is enabled on Android 17, Accessibility Protection restricts access to Android’s AccessibilityService interface to verified apps categorized as Accessibility Tools. The interface supports accessibility features in apps, and Google says the restriction is intended to curb its misuse while preserving assistive technology.
Intrusion Logging is optional and keeps logs for 12 months
Intrusion Logging stores end-to-end encrypted security and network events in cloud storage accessible only to the user. Logs are retained for a rolling 12 months and then automatically deleted. The feature requires a separate manual opt-in.
What USB Protection does while a phone is locked
With USB Protection enabled, a new USB connection defaults to charging-only while the phone is locked. A connection established before the screen locks remains active. Google lists Pixel 6 and newer, along with selected Android 17 devices, as supported; hardware differences can affect functions such as charging speed while the phone is locked.
Three more defenses round out the suite
Advanced Protection Mode disables WebGPU in Chrome to reduce exposure to potential browser-based attack surfaces. Failed Authentication Lock locks down the device after repeated failed authentication attempts in settings or secured apps; Google limits it to selected Android 17 devices.
View Supporting Apps is a settings page that lists installed apps that check the device’s Advanced Protection status. Developers can be notified when the mode is enabled so they can activate features for users in that group.
