Skills are reportedly invoked by typing / in a Gemini chat, and multiple Skills can be used in one conversation. Gems, by comparison, are selected through the Gems interface.

Google describes Gems as custom AI experts for repeatable tasks such as career coaching, brainstorming, and coding help. Users can give a Gem detailed instructions and upload files to provide context, making it possible to reuse a tailored setup for recurring tasks.
