On Nov. 3, 2026, Google announced that AI tools for U.S. K–12 school accounts would be off by default until administrators enabled them. A school opting out of AI altogether would also lose students’ access to Google Search in its school environment. The change was expected in early 2027.

Administrators could manage three tools individually

The announced controls covered Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Google Search. Administrators could turn each on or off, with all three reported off by default until enabled.

The policy announcement followed questions from U.S. senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley about AI’s effects on children and education. NeoTeo previously covered the senators’ questions to Google about AI in schools.

The reported Search consequence applies when a school rejects AI altogether: students would lose access to Google Search through their school accounts. That condition is distinct from administrators’ ability to manage the named tools individually.

Google said it planned to update Search with step-by-step guidance through problems, intended to help students work them out rather than receive quick answers.
