Do something for 15 days and it becomes a habit, goes a popular recipe about the positive actions we want to make a regular part of our lives. Habitica is based on this logic and offers a playful environment in the form of a free application with the goal of turning actions into habits with an RPG game.
Quite a few of us struggle to keep up with our daily tasks. The reasons come in family-size boxes with a wide variety of excuses and setbacks that don't always justify late deliveries or even missing them. Whatever you do, distractions are at hand, and the incentives of completing a task fall short against a habit as fiercely demanding and addictive as procrastination, nowadays a product of social media, mobile phones, or the internet in general.
If you consider this a problem you need to solve in your daily life, to combat this enjoyable pleasure with short- and long-term consequences, there are hundreds of apps, programs, and psychologists ready. In this case, we went the gamification route (or ludification, for those who hate anglicisms) and found a free app to turn actions into habits through a game called Habitica.
The Habitica program is free, and to play it you need to create an account, log in with Facebook or your Google profile, and you'll access its interface to start seeing what this productivity app with attractive rewards offers. As in an RPG game, the app will reward you each time you complete hours of productive actions by giving you user points in the form of gold and leveling up your experience. Its central panel is divided into Habits, Daily Tasks, To-Dos, and Rewards, and that's where you'll manage your daily life.
In the first case, for example, for each hour of productive work placed in habits, the program rewards you with coins and experience, while for each negative habit (like eating at odd hours), you lose points and experience. Daily Tasks work similarly, but you lose life if you don't complete them since the game treats them as personal projects or things that improve your life. To-Dos is a list of chores and serves to gain experience quickly, as you can put things like calling your grandparents, washing dishes, or learning about a specific topic on Wikipedia.
In rewards, you'll have the section to treat yourself whenever you finish generating habits, daily tasks, and to-dos. Habitica lets you add your own actions and comment on them. The program has an interesting Wiki page for you to learn everything you can do level by level, such as customizing your avatar with hairstyles, clothing, skin, and more. You can also share your progress with other users or on social media. For those who have trouble organizing and enjoy games, this can be a viewpoint and action from which to address their problem, though on my part, the hardest habit to create is using this type of program for more than two days. Tell us your experience.
