No, there is still nothing official about Half-Life 3, but the latest clues suggest that could change… soon.
Let's start with what we do know: The ending of Half-Life: Alyx confirms that Gordon Freeman's mission is not over. “We have work to do,” says Eli Vance, handing over “the crowbar / the pry bar.” And that's all. A little pre-credit tease in a game exclusive (though not that much) to virtual reality systems. Almost five years have passed (“Alyx” arrived on Steam during the pandemic), and the questions multiply: What else do we have? What's the next rumor? Where will the new hope come from? Well…
The Voice of G-Man and the 'HLX' Project
The voice you just heard belongs to Mike Shapiro, much better known for his role as G-Man, the interdimensional bureaucrat and feared “talent kidnapper with unlimited potential”. That tweet is the first in over four years: everything before basically coincides with the release of “Alyx”, but his New Year's greeting is… different. The way he says “unexpected surprises” drove fans crazy, and with more than 30 thousand likes, the Half-Life 3 rumors reached a new limit.
But that's not all: Many dataminers on the Web keep finding references to an internal Valve project called “HLX”. Apparently, one of HLX's goals is to revolutionize the game's “physical fidelity”, just as Half-Life 2 did in its time. Some went as far as suggesting that HLX playtests have already begun among friends and family at Valve, and if development continues at a good pace, an announcement this year is not ruled out.
The last slot on the rumor board takes us to something called “Project White Sands”. In August 2024, actress Natasha Chandel (whom we find in other video game projects like Starfield and Call of Duty: Vanguard) posted on her official site that she was working on a “Project White Sands” under Valve's wing… information that was removed in record time. What did fans say? White Sands is a park in New Mexico… the same state where Black Mesa is located.
