The world has become a relentless desert, and the few survivors left must risk their lives to obtain anything that gives them an advantage. Men, women and robots face off in open combat aboard their personal ships, built from every piece of scrap they found along the way. Welcome to Hover Junkers, one of the biggest promises headed for the world of virtual reality.
There's a detail every player will have to resolve in their own way: the relationship between the virtual reality title they want to play and the space available in their home. Without a doubt, sitting still and only moving our head eliminates a large part of virtual reality's potential. We've seen several walking platforms that manage to solve almost any space restriction, but we still need more headsets, and more games. The vast majority of devices point to 2016 as the launch year; however, software is taking its time. An exception to the rule is Hover Junkers, whose demos are increasingly fabulous.
The video you just watched is based on the HTC Vive, but compatibility with other headsets (like the Oculus Rift) has already been confirmed, as long as they meet the minimum requirements. In essence, each player will use different pieces of scrap to customize and adjust their ship's defenses. Enemy fire becomes quite intense in some matches, and a steel plate placed in the right spot will make a huge difference. Defenses can be moved at will, and of course they are not eternal.
The official Hover Junkers website presents a very interesting story about the game, to the point that it wouldn't be bad to see it turned into a single-player FPS. Its Steam listing announces it as Early Access, but there is still no way to download a copy. What we can do is follow its blog, full of details and videos about the game's development, or register an email address to receive the latest news. Will other projects follow the same line as Hover Junkers? I hope so.
