How to block followers of a Twitter account

These days, Twitter is the equivalent of a World War I trench covered in chlorine gas. The toxicity of some exchanges far exceeds the classic flame wars we saw at the end of the 20th century, and there seems to be no ceiling. Despite all that poison, the bird social network has many people worth following, but that condition doesn't always extend to their followers. That's when Twitter Block Chain appears, a Chrome and Firefox extension that automates blocking all followers of a Twitter account.

Quitting Twitter isn't complicated. I did it several years ago, and any news from the social network is reproduced in seconds, so no one really misses anything. An example? President Donald Trump once again criticized the Federal Reserve to keep the interest rate from rising. Of course, these comments were posted on Twitter, and the specialized press cloned those tweets to exhaustion. Now, it's possible that a head of state or someone famous is interesting enough to follow, but nobody guarantees the same with their followers. In fact, some “followers” are only there to attack the account owner, spread fake news, and/or poison the rest of the thread. Blocking one isolated user is easy, but what can we do when it's thousands of accounts?

The extension may take a while

One solution is to install the Twitter Block Chain extension, compatible with Google Chrome and Firefox. Its job is to block all users in the Followers section of a Twitter profile, except those you already follow. Alternatively, you can also block the users that profile follows. Log into your Twitter account, visit the profile in question, go to the Followers or Following section, and click the icon. If you use the secondary button and enter the extension's configuration, you'll see a list of blocked users, their connection, and the block date. If someone got blocked by mistake, you can correct it here.

This section will fill with blocked users

There isn't much more to say about Twitter Block Chain... except for one detail: it might not be working all that well. The extension hasn't received updates in eight months, and several users indicated that the Twitter API limits the number of automatic blocks. In general, there shouldn't be issues processing hundreds of profiles, but the aforementioned President Trump has more than 50 million followers. Twitter Block Chain is essentially an orbital bombardment, a preventive mass attack to avoid abuse, insults, and other unpleasant exchanges in the future. Still, I insist: the most effective thing is to quit Twitter and get its news through other portals.
