The folks at Framework keep proving that it is perfectly possible to create a modular and “upgradeable” laptop, but it has also spawned a series of fabulous projects that manage to reuse its hardware without restrictions. Previously we have talked about both the Framework AIO and the FrameTablet, and today it is the turn of the Framework Cyberdeck, a computer inspired by the Sprawl trilogy by William Gibson.
When you hear the word Cyberdeck, old-time science fiction fans will automatically think of the novel Neuromancer and its two sequels, but nowadays we use that expression for any compact DIY computer with an integrated screen and keyboard that adopts (to a greater or lesser degree) the cyberpunk essence. Some systems received extraordinary attention, while others seem to have been built in 15 minutes with leftover parts… but that is exactly what makes the Cyberdeck concept so fascinating.
Cyberdeck + Framework = ?
That brings us to the Ben Makes Everything channel, which we remember very well for his laser projector based on a faulty hard drive. The most popular path to creating a Cyberdeck is the Raspberry Pi, but it remains relatively humble hardware despite its updates, and it lacks M.2 slots to install faster storage. Ben also explored the possibility of using a LattePanda, however, its price is hair-raising. Finally, he was lucky enough to find a Framework mainboard on eBay at a good price, and with the hardware equation solved, Ben focused on the design.
The same functionality of a laptop, good performance, a decent number of ports, connectivity for other projects (read Arduino), an unmistakable cyberpunk aesthetic, and portability were his goals. All that had to wait for the screen, since its format defines the final dimensions of the computer. Ben chose a 12.3-inch panel with a 2400x900 pixel resolution and a USB-C interface. The keyboard for this cyberdeck is based on an Apple Magic 2, and the trackball (obviously) is a Logitech T-SBC12-CPQ, present on other keyboards like the Compaq MX-11800.
By sacrificing a six-port hub, Ben managed to solve the port deficit, and then redirected his efforts to creating the case. Enormous amounts of 3D printing and CNC aluminum cutting were necessary for the entire structure, and the 45-degree angle on the screen gives it the final touch, although several components remain exposed on the back. Even so, his result is extraordinary… and deep down, I want one.
