Gaming laptops promise plenty of power without sacrificing portability, but they have a few drawbacks. On one hand, they're extremely expensive; on the other, they use components that don't perform as well as their desktop counterparts, even when they share the same name. Socket Science on YouTube decided to solve both problems by building a gaming laptop using desktop parts.
The label "gamer" appears on almost every laptop on sale, but after looking at their specs, the more "serious" models rarely drop below €1,500. That's one reason we've seen consoles like the Steam Deck explode in popularity, but the story doesn't end there. Socket Science on YouTube thinks gaming laptops are a scam. Why? Because there's no performance parity with their desktop equivalents.
For example, the "mobile" RTX 4090 performs at half the speed of its full desktop version, and while that makes technical sense, it should really have a different name. Fed up with that, Socket Science spent the last 14 months designing a gaming laptop with desktop parts, and here's the result:

The computer is based on a Ryzen 5 5600X processor, a Radeon RX 6600 graphics card, a mini ITX motherboard with the A520 chipset that received several modifications (basically, shaving off ports to reduce its height), low-profile DDR4 memory (similar to Kingston Value modules), a portable monitor, an ultra-thin keyboard, a touchpad, and a DC/DC power supply robust enough to power all the components.
The most "homemade" part is, without doubt, the cooling. Socket Science combined several heat pipes, heatsinks, copper blocks, thermal paste, J-B Weld, and a lot of force to make everything have good contact. The fans became a problem, as he couldn't find models with the exact size, so he designed one in 3D using an AMD cooler motor as a starting point, and modified another from the graphics card.
Adapting the keyboard, touchpad, and monitor panel didn't present major difficulties (it just took work), and with a small printer at his disposal, Socket Science had to glue/solder the parts. For safety, he also created his own power connector, but he didn't add a battery, so the setup needs an umbilical cord (not surprising since gaming laptops are almost always used plugged in).
Personally, I think the project reached a good end point, and it definitely deserves a "version 2.0" with a more precise design and a purpose-built thermal solution.
