Modifying your DNS configuration isn't exactly “normal”, but we also understand that some providers do a terrible job maintaining their servers. Going into the network section to apply these changes becomes frustrating in record time; however, the inexhaustible Nirsoft steps in with a small tool called QuickSetDNS. With it, you can change your PC's DNS in a couple of clicks and configure additional presets to experiment with other servers.
In a perfect world, the automatic configuration of DNS servers should be more than enough for the user… but this is not a perfect world. There are providers that have a real Achilles' heel in their DNS, and one of the first rules of the “Universal Manual for Surfing the Internet Without Losing Your Sanity” is to replace them. That is where QuickSetDNS intervenes, another solid tool from Nirsoft.
QuickSetDNS: How to Change Your PC's DNS with Ease
QuickSetDNS uses a series of profiles to define and apply new DNS servers for both IPv4 and IPv6. The three factory options included are Google, CloudFlare, and Quad9, but there are also entries dedicated to automatic DNS, and to the DNS reported by the router. Ctrl+N is the keyboard combination to create a new DNS server in that list, while Ctrl+E edits existing profiles, and Del deletes them completely (careful, because there is no "undo" for this).
Continuing with keyboard shortcuts, F2 activates the selected DNS for IPv4 only, while F7 activates it in both IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time. If for some reason you need to know the exact command that QuickSetDNS applies with these entries, the option Copy SetDNS Command Line (Ctrl+L) in the context menu is what you're looking for. At the top of the interface appears the network adapter selector, and if you wish to modify its values in the Registry, the File menu includes the command Open Adapter in RegEdit.
