In this tutorial, we'll show you how to make panoramas with GIMP using the Stitch Panorama plugin, which provides simple tools to create a panorama from two photographs.
For those unfamiliar with GIMP, the platform offers a wide range of tools for editing and manipulating images. It also allows you to install third-party plugins and scripts to expand its capabilities. If you have GIMP installed on your computer, you can directly install the plugin; otherwise, you'll need to install GIMP.
Installing the Stitch Panorama Plugin
Now download the file OldFiles/stitch_0.9.4.py; go to the folder where the file is saved and copy it into the plug-ins folder of GIMP.
Restart GIMP, and the plugin will be installed and ready to use for making panoramas. At this point, add your images and go to Filters – Utils – and select the recently installed plugin.
Creating the Panorama
A window will appear asking for the order of the photos. Click Accept. Then you need to set the stitching points from the pop-up window. To do this, click the button Set/Edit/View/Control Points. If you don't set a joining point on the images, you cannot continue.
To set the joining points, in the new window click Add, then in each image click with the auxiliary mouse button and select Tools – Selection Tools – Rectangular Selection. Select a reference point, such as a column, a tree, or a bridge pillar. Then click Accept and wait for the platform to incorporate the unions. Remember to do this on both images.
You must make the selection carefully and methodically, because a poor choice of points will result in a poor panorama.
To have the panorama open in another window, click the Stitch Panorama button and wait for the process.
