The development of electricity exploded during the transition to the 20th century, but the increasing abundance of this resource also brought a certain lack of knowledge about its safe use. In other words... the public needed to be informed and educated so they wouldn't die by electrocution. That led an Austrian physician named Stefan Jellinek to publish the book “Protección Eléctrica en 132 Imágenes”, which basically teaches us how to die by electrocution…
Doctor Jellinek and his father were pioneers in what is now known as electropathology, prioritizing first aid, care for the injured, and general prevention. His role as a forensic expert allowed him to document a significant number of electrical accidents starting in 1898. All that knowledge ended up in the book “Protección Eléctrica en 132 Imágenes” from 1936, and in the Electropathological Museum (founded the same year) located in Vienna.
Some of the scenes shown in the images are certainly absurd, but dying by electrocution is no joke. Electricity is patient and tends to strike at moments of greatest confidence. Respect, not fear.
