The so-called "dark mode" has truly exploded in popularity. Many sites, services, programs, and operating systems already support it, but white remains the main color of the Web, and quite a few sites, for design reasons, do not offer a dark theme or anything similar. However, the Dark Reader extension lets you enable dark mode everywhere, adjust brightness and contrast, limit changes to specific sites, and experiment with different filters.
The Era of "Dark Mode"
Is it a fad? An advantage? The debate remains open, but we are convinced that dark mode is here to stay. Many platforms and applications do not hesitate to promote it openly, while others have added it to their features as a secondary option and nothing more.
Now, if dark mode is a simple aesthetic change, how complicated would it be to extend it to all those portals and services that do not support it? In practice, the answer is "not much", because the only thing we need is an extension compatible with Chrome and Firefox called Dark Reader. The first time we talked about it back in 2018, but it definitely deserves a review.
How to Enable Dark Mode Everywhere with Dark Reader
Once the extension is installed, Dark Reader will add an icon to our browser's interface. There we will find options for dark and light mode (i.e., its own variant of "light"), brightness and contrast sliders, and sepia or grayscale functions. One of the most interesting aspects of Dark Reader is that it manages to separate dark mode control for each site. If a page does not look quite right, we can disable the extension only for that page using the interface or its keyboard shortcut (which I recommend modifying to avoid conflicts).
In the More tab, the extension offers font control (basically, it overrides the font chosen by the site), a slider for its intensity, and its four "theme generation modes". The differences of each are explained on the official Dark Reader page, but we are confident that "Dynamic" is the one that gives the best results, at the cost of a tiny bit of extra resources when the page loads. Anyway, we recommend experimenting with them and finding the ideal mode for each system.
In Summary
Dark Reader is an open source extension, compatible with Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and other flavors of Chromium. Its developers acknowledge that Dark Reader's behavior is not uniform across all browsers (for example, Filter+ mode generates errors in Firefox), however, it is far superior to what we have seen in other similar projects.
