To lock WhatsApp on your phone, use its app-lock setting; a passkey helps you sign back into your account, two-step verification adds account protection, and Chat Lock protects selected conversations. Choose the control for the access you want to restrict.

Lock WhatsApp on your phone

A how-to published by Trecebits on October 25, 2026, describes this route: open WhatsApp Settings, choose Privacy, tap App Lock, and enable it. The guide lists automatic-lock choices of immediately, after 1 minute, or after 30 minutes.

WhatsApp announced fingerprint unlocking for supported Android phones on October 31, 2019. The company also noted that Touch ID and Face ID had earlier been introduced for iPhone. Those are app-opening checks: they control access to WhatsApp on the device.

Use a passkey to sign back in

A passkey is an account sign-in credential, not a prompt that WhatsApp describes as appearing every time you open the app. WhatsApp says you can sign back in with a fingerprint, face recognition, or your device’s screen-lock code. The company lists Settings > Account > Passkeys as the place to manage passkeys.

WhatsApp also says an account can have multiple passkeys when its user has both Android and iOS devices. Choose this option when your goal is signing back in, rather than adding a local app-opening check.

Add account protection with two-step verification

Two-step verification protects account authentication, not access to WhatsApp after it is already open on your phone. WhatsApp says the extra layer is intended to help prevent someone from taking over an account, even if they get its one-time verification code.

Lock selected chats

Chat Lock applies to individual or group conversations you choose. WhatsApp says it moves a selected chat out of the inbox into a locked folder and hides the message contents in notifications.

Secret Code adds a separate code for locked chats. You can use it to hide the locked-chat folder and find that folder by entering the code in WhatsApp’s search bar. This is a way to protect selected conversations, while app lock applies to opening WhatsApp itself.
