How to Open Corrupted ZIP and RAR Files

The best way to avoid digital accidents is to maintain a good backup discipline, but sometimes things fail due to forces beyond our control (say, hardware), and the result ranges from total data loss to the corruption of ZIP and/or RAR files. Fortunately, there are different options to open corrupted ZIP and RAR files, and although they are far from perfect, the idea here is to recover as much information as possible.

“The ZIP file is invalid”. Cursed message if there ever was one. You don't know how or why, but the error is conclusive. If the file in question is popular and has multiple mirrors online, the most direct solution is to download it again, but if that compressed file is strictly personal and comes from an old or problematic medium (for example, an optical disc that has been stored for years or even a floppy disk), then you have to get your hands dirty.

Recovering Data from Corrupted ZIP and RAR Files

The first recommendation is to stay calm. There may be something that can be done with that file, and more than once, the results are solid. Think of a corrupted ZIP with 100 files inside. If we have the possibility to rescue even a fraction of them, then we should try. Where do we start?

How to Open Corrupted RAR Files

The good news is that the official WinRAR has diagnostic and repair tools. If you think there is something wrong with an archive, press Alt+T to invoke the Test function, or double-click it from inside the program. If WinRAR throws an error, press Alt+R or go to Tools -> Repair Archive.

WinRAR will ask you how you want to interpret the file (either RAR or ZIP), perform a brief analysis and try to determine the problem. It all depends on how extensive the damage is, but generally WinRAR does a good job. If the file has a corrupt headers error, WinRAR will ask you to confirm whether you want to mark the file as solid or not. There is a bit of trial and error here, but answering “Yes” often works well.

How to Open Corrupted ZIP Files

And the good news continues, because you can repeat exactly the same process in WinRAR to open corrupted ZIP files. Just remember to tell the program to treat the file as ZIP, and let it do its task. ZIP files tend to be more flexible during recovery, and it is likely that WinRAR will bring its content back from the dead with minimal losses.

However, WinRAR is not the only one with this capability. A while ago we recommended Zip2Fix, which still works smoothly despite its age (it has been over eight years without updates). Its interface has no advanced options: open the damaged ZIP file from inside Zip2Fix, and that's it. The only thing I've noticed is that its results were inferior: it recovered 100 files out of 113 (it reported a maximum of 112), while WinRAR brought back 112 out of 113.

Of course, the list of programs to open corrupted ZIP and RAR files is longer, and it comes with different experiences. For example, Yodot RAR Repair was a real torture in terms of speed, and DiskInternals ZIP Repair confused half a dozen files with folders. Personally, I suggest WinRAR be your main weapon, and fall back to other options if it doesn't respond. Good luck!
