Microsoft recently unveiled plans to remove some legacy File Explorer options from the Windows 11 Dev Channel, including “Show drive letters” and “Hide protected operating system files.” Testers were quick to argue that those features matter, and within a week the company reversed course. The episode is a reminder that Redmond’s priorities don’t always line up with user needs, so finding ways to optimize Windows 11 yourself remains a worthwhile exercise.
That’s where SophiApp enters the picture. This free, open-source, portable application takes more than a hundred PowerShell tweaks and wraps them in a clean graphical interface. It’s the logical successor to the Sophia Script project, and we already covered it back in April last year when we first introduced the tool. It was recently updated, and it’s still an excellent choice for customizing Windows 11.
Navigating SophiApp
The user interface is divided into nine categories: Privacy, Personalization, System, UWP Apps, Games, Scheduled Tasks, Security, Context Menu, and Settings. Hovering over any item brings up a helpful description, so you always know what a toggle does before you flip it.
Privacy and Personalization
- Privacy controls telemetry, feedback, tracking, suggestions, and other “experiences” that Windows recommends.
- Personalization handles the desktop, File Explorer, taskbar, classic Control Panel, default colors, wallpaper quality, and similar details.
System, Apps, and Games
- System covers advanced options such as hibernation, printer management, Windows Update, power plans, language lists, and the default terminal.
- UWP Apps and Games make it easy to uninstall built-in Windows apps and the Xbox Game Bar, and disable the automatic launch of Microsoft Teams and Cortana.
Scheduled Tasks, Security, and More
- Scheduled Tasks lets you add cleanup jobs for temporary files and Windows Update downloads.
- Security offers Microsoft Defender settings and User Account Control options.
- Context Menu helps restore classic Windows 10 menu items.
- Settings changes the language and theme of the interface.
A few final tips
Before you start toggling options, it’s a good idea to create a system restore point. Adding the two cleanup tasks is also a smart move. SophiApp worked very well in our tests, asked for nothing extra under Windows 11, and remains completely free and open source.
