As is its style, Google has joined the April Fools' Day celebrations by updating its service to let you play Ms. Pac-Man on Google Maps. You can roam the streets of your city with Ms. Pac-Man, eating dots and fruit while dodging ghosts.
During the first day of April, much of the world celebrates April Fools' Day, and Google joined in with a very special idea: playing Ms. Pac-Man on Google Maps. Whether you play from your computer or a mobile device, the maps app lets you turn any location into a playable level of Ms. Pac-Man. The process is simple: go to Google Maps and tap the surprisingly visible icon featuring Ms. Pac-Man's face. After that, you'll be able to control Pac-Man's wife to eat dots, fruit, and avoid ghosts on familiar streets.
A Recurring April Fools' Surprise
This is not the first time the Mountain View giant has chosen the Pac-Man franchise to celebrate. Two years earlier, exactly for the April Fools' Day of 2015, Google turned its Maps service into Pac-Man levels and also transformed Pac-Man and his ghost companions into a Doodle (a permanent game that is still accessible). An interesting detail in the mobile app is that there are two versions of Ms. Pac-Man: iPhone users can play in their current location, while Android users are taken to a random place in the world.
Ms. Pac-Man came out a year after the original Pac-Man debuted in arcades in 1980. Both games are practically the same, except that Ms. Pac-Man has a bow on her head, painted lips, sometimes a beauty mark and highlighted eyelashes, and you can hear a different melody. Ms. Pac-Man is available to play for free in Google Maps, both on the web version and in its mobile app (make sure you download the latest version).
