Some online services have retired SMS verification for security reasons, although it still works as a compatibility mechanism on many platforms. Of course, that means you have to give up your real phone number, but the portal Receive-smss offers a large number of temporary numbers to receive SMS messages free with links, codes, and confirmations.
It all seems to indicate that SMS communication is about to join the group of "retired technologies" like the landline phone, the fax, and floppy disks. However, there are still applications that require the classic message, and one of them is two-step verification. Many services are trying to convince their users to adopt an official app to perform such verification, but when everything else fails, SMS usually comes to the rescue.
Now, the problem is that there are services out there that ask for a mobile phone number to confirm our identity when they really don't need to. How to receive an SMS on temporary numbers with Receive-smss
The site requires no registration or login. You just have to choose a number, click Open, confirm the SMS send to that number, and refresh the message list until you find yours. During our test we have seen messages from platforms like Amazon, Google, PayPal, Facebook, Uber, Movistar, and WhatsApp, but we do not recommend using temporary numbers for high-profile services (all their content is public, and the risk of hijacking increases).
Now, Receive-smss is not perfect. The arrival of the message depends on several factors, including region (some of these numbers do not accept international messages), provider, service, and type of verification (it's not the same a code as a link). Receive-smss suggests waiting a couple of minutes and refreshing the box without closing the tab, but if you don't recognize anything, it most likely didn't arrive. Even so, don't give up. There are many numbers available, and one of them should be able to reproduce the message you need.
