How to Send and Receive Large Files with WebWormHole

Believe it or not, transferring large files over the Web is still complicated for many users. Some services have very strict limits, others carry dependencies, and then there are those that suffer from "speed pains", but the WebWormHole portal does things differently. Connections are direct from one browser to another, files are sent in a similar way to streaming, and it is also open source.

It all starts with a small comic from the classic XKCD portal: After considering six different transfer methods, the chosen solution was to load the data onto a USB stick and physically take it to its destination. The exercise is presented with humor, but there are occasions when that method is the only one available (do you remember the black hole photo? It demanded half a ton of hard drives). However, it is still inconvenient for many users to send and receive large files over the Internet. Most services have natural restrictions (for example, Firefox Send supports up to 2.5 GB), you have to register, create accounts, enable permissions... it's not the best.

WebWormHole aims to put an end to all that with a single move. Inspired by Brian Warner's Magic Wormhole project, this variant (which, by the way, is still in alpha phase and you should not use it for anything critical) allows users to transfer huge files from one browser to another, without needing to install extra software or create accounts. The heavy lifting is left to WebRTC, which also has the ability to encrypt content.

Now, my first tests were not so positive. There are two connection methods: share the QR code, or send the keyword... but when trying to connect with my tablet browsers (Kiwi Browser and Amazon Silk) I simply had no success.

Once the issue was solved, I discovered that WebWormHole sends files in a streaming-like manner, instead of loading all the content at once. This makes the transfer more efficient, and should not put as much pressure when upload speed is limited. In short, I think it is worth leaving WebWormHole among our favorites. If you need to transfer a file in a simple way, it will likely get you out of trouble in the future.
