In this tutorial, we'll explain step by step how to share your screen over the local network using the VLC player. This way you can share your desktop with one or more computers without needing to download any programs or add-ons. The only requirement is that all computers are connected to the same network and have VLC installed.
Configuring the source computer
To broadcast your screen to one or more computers, you first need to adjust the streaming settings on the source computer. Open VLC, go to the Media menu, and select Stream. In the dialog box, choose Capture device.
In the capture mode, select Desktop. Then, in the desired frame rate for capture field, set the frames per second (the normal range is 10 to 20 FPS).
After setting these parameters, click Stream. In the next window (Source), click Next.
In the next window, select Display locally, and from the Add dropdown choose UDP (legacy). Then click Add.
In the next dialog, enter the IP address of the source computer and the port: 8080 (from the UDP section).
To get these details, open a Command Prompt window, type ipconfig, and select the IPv4 Address.
In the following window, you can create different profiles and change the encapsulation format, codecs, and so on. We left them at their defaults.
At this point, all you need to do is click Stream. If you followed the steps, a streaming transmission of your desktop will start, which you can share with the computers connected to your network.
Receiving the stream on other computers
On the destination computers, configure VLC to receive your transmission. Click Media and select Open Network Stream.
In the protocol section, enter the same IP address and port you used on the source computer. Then click Play to start receiving the video of the desktop.
This method only works on computers with Windows operating systems, and you can only share your screen. You cannot control the system at any time.
