A Steam Deck can play PS5 games by streaming them from a working PlayStation 5 with Remote Play enabled. The PS5 runs the game; the Deck receives the stream through Chiaki-NG, so this is not native PS5 gameplay or emulation on the handheld. The setup starts with local console registration, then adds remote access if you want to connect away from home.
What you need
- A working PS5 with Remote Play enabled.
- A Steam Deck with Chiaki-NG installed.
- The PS5 and Deck on the same local network for initial setup, as BGR recommends in its setup guide.
Set up Remote Play
- Enable Remote Play on the PS5. Open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn it on, following the setup path in BGR’s guide.
- Install Chiaki-NG on the Steam Deck. Switch to Desktop Mode, open Discover Software Center, and install the app. BGR refers to the client as Chiaki4deck/Chiaki-NG in its guide.
- Register the PS5 locally. Open Chiaki-NG while the Deck and console are on the same network. If the app discovers the console, Chiaki-NG can register it automatically without a PIN. If discovery fails, register it manually with the PS5’s IP address and a PIN from the console’s PlayStation Remote Play link settings. Chiaki-NG’s configuration guide describes both routes.
Register the PS5 locally
Local registration comes before Chiaki-NG’s remote-connection setup. Automatic discovery avoids entering a PIN; the manual route requires the console’s IP address and Remote Play PIN. That distinction is useful if the PS5 does not appear during setup: try the manual registration path rather than treating a PIN as mandatory for everyone.
Connect away from home
- Sign in to PSN in Chiaki-NG after local registration. When the PS5 is unavailable on the local network, it appears in Chiaki-NG’s PSN remote-connection tab. The project describes this route as using UDP hole punching—a technique that can avoid manually forwarding router ports when the network supports it. If the network prevents that connection, Chiaki-NG lists manual port forwarding as a fallback. See the project’s remote-connection instructions.
- Launch Chiaki-NG from Game Mode and select Play. The PS5 can be on or in Rest Mode. To connect while it is resting, configure it to stay connected to the internet; BGR describes this condition in its PS5-to-Deck setup guide.
Network quality and controls
A weak network connection can add latency. BGR notes that poor network quality increases delay, so a technically successful connection may still feel less responsive. Viewers commenting on GG_Sheed’s Chiaki-NG tutorial reported a mix of successful remote setups—including while traveling or using a mobile hotspot—and PSN sign-in or connection errors. Those are individual experiences, not guaranteed fixes.
BGR also says the Steam Deck’s controls map fairly well to a DualSense-style layout. Its trackpads can mimic the DualSense touchpad and PlayStation button, and you can remap controls. For a different approach to PS5 games, NeoTeo’s article on PS5 emulation covers emulation rather than streaming from a working console.
Quick reference
- At home: enable Remote Play, install Chiaki-NG, and register the PS5 locally.
- For remote play: sign in to PSN in Chiaki-NG after local registration; use manual port forwarding if the network prevents the PSN route.
- For Rest Mode: allow the PS5 to remain connected to the internet.
