A common trick among laptops is to turn them into headless servers when their screen fails, but it also works the other way: take the panel and make it work as an independent monitor. So how hard would it be to extend that idea to an old iMac G5? Enthusiast Thomas Burns decided to find out for himself, and although he admits there are simpler methods, his exploration and transformation project is fascinating.
Giving Old Hardware a Second Life
Repairing and reusing hardware that seems destined for the landfill is one of the most satisfying processes we can undertake. In most cases, the part to replace is relatively inexpensive, and you're surprised by how easy it is to extract thousands of additional hours from any device. Two striking examples were shared by Matt from DIY Perks, when he recovered the parts of a damaged laptop and turned a nearly destroyed smartphone into a laptop.
The iMac G5 Project
However, Thomas Burns's project focuses on something a bit bigger: an iMac G5 iSight from 2005. Its limited specs, combined with the PowerPC architecture and lack of current support, basically turned these iMacs into paperweights, but they do have some quality components. In this specific G5, that's its screen: at 20 inches with a native resolution of 1680×1050, it's begging to function as a secondary monitor, and the iMac's all-in-one format is extremely useful here.
The controller and inverter problem
Thomas's path isn't the simplest. In fact, his first recommendation to readers who want to do something similar is to look for a compatible module on AliExpress for less than 50 dollars and replace the entire "controller+inverter" structure, connecting that hardware directly to the panel. Instead, his effort focused on identifying pinouts and voltages. On one hand, there's almost no service information about the panel, and with Apple being Apple, that's not documentation you can request. On the other hand, Thomas discovered a significant error in one of the connectors, which indicated 3.3V when it was actually 12V.
The rest of the conversion
The rest was a matter of tricking the inverter into powering on correctly (with the help of a relay), installing an HDMI port using one of the FireWire holes in the case, and adding a new power switch.
