The iMac G4 is one of the most interesting computers in Apple's family, but with two decades on its shoulders, it becomes difficult to find units that work perfectly. Add to that its obsolete hardware configuration, and the G4 acquires a better profile when it comes to special projects. History tells us that the iMac G4 arrived in Apple stores in January 2002. Besides becoming the first iMac to fully adopt LCD technology for its panels, the hybrid design between “sunflower and lamp” automatically captured public attention. Still, the G4 was available for less than three years: users demanded even larger screens, and the thermal demands of the new silicon forced Apple to use a conservative design in the G5.
Fast forward 22 years, the iMac G4 is an essential model for any collector and hardware enthusiast, but it's likely to have some “pains”. In fact, Hugh Jeffreys (known for his fabulous smartphone repairs) managed to find three locally, abandoned on the street for anyone to take. In a calamitous state and with its original hardware not working, Hugh took the best path: install a new computer inside.
iMac G4: Transformed from PowerPC to M1, 22 Years Later
Hugh decided to start with the screen and mechanical arm. The good news is that the 1080p panel from a Macbook Pro fits perfectly inside the casing, and on AliExpress you can buy all the necessary hardware to make it work properly. The bad news is that “threading” the new cables and disassembling/reassembling the mechanical arm is a real nightmare. From the start, it's clear that the arm had taken some hits over time, affecting its alignment. Hugh had to seek his father's help to reassemble it, with a good dose of brute force.
Needless to say, the casing was a festival of dirt, but a solid combination of water, detergent, and toothpaste worked wonders on the plastic. The hardware chosen to transform this iMac G4 is a Mac Mini with the M1 chip. While it's not the fastest example in that series, it's an excellent candidate for its reduced profile and low power consumption. Hugh had to build a power button, adapt the existing WiFi antennas, and use a significant amount of glue in several places, but the final result is great, and this iMac G4 can shine again in 2024.
