In yet another episode of “Your productivity loss from using chatbots is one click away,” the public is slowly warming up to the optimized version of Bing with artificial intelligence. Why? Because it is the most direct and effective way to evaluate a model based on GPT-4. However, the new Bing has some requirements we need to solve. The most important is using Edge to chat with the bot. Fortunately, the extension Bing Chat for All Browsers enables access in Chrome (and other Chromium flavors) as well as Mozilla Firefox.
OpenAI presented their new GPT-4 model, Microsoft confirmed the use of that same technology in Bing, and as expected, users are trying to interact with the bot… but Redmond cannot go against its own nature, which means everyone interested must meet some requirements.
The first requirement is using a Microsoft account. Even old Hotmail addresses are compatible and should not cause problems. But the second requirement is access with Edge… with all its ridiculous built-in bloatware. Luckily, a new extension called Bing Chat for All Browsers lets us escape the tyranny of Edge and test the chatbot in Chrome or Firefox.
Bing Chat in every browser
Its developer Sunghyun Cho, better known as anaclumos on GitHub, explains that the extension works automatically in Chrome, but Firefox needs a small tweak. Basically, we must update to the latest version, go to about:config, change the field “layout.css.overflow-overlay.enabled” from false to true, and restart the browser. If we don't do this, scrolling in the chat window will not work.
At the same time, anaclumos reminds us that a Microsoft account is mandatory. The extension cannot do anything about that, and some users will have to join the waiting list at bing.com/chat. Other than that, the extension works perfectly. Choose a personality for Bing Chat, and get started!
