9to5Mac reported on October 27, 2026, that iOS 27.2 introduced selfie-based adult confirmation for Apple Accounts. Apple’s instructions require iOS or iPadOS 27.2 or later, and the option is available only in eligible regions.
What the selfie check confirms
Apple describes the process as age estimation to confirm that a user is an adult. Its stated purpose is adult confirmation, not reporting a precise age. Depending on the region, Apple may ask for confirmation when someone creates an Apple Account, updates device software, changes certain safety settings, or downloads or purchases an app rated 18 or older.
Software requirements and listed regions
The selfie option requires iOS 27.2 or later, or iPadOS 27.2 or later. Apple lists Australia, Brazil, Singapore and the United Kingdom as places where selfie confirmation is available. Apple separately lists Texas among the jurisdictions with adult-confirmation requirements.
How capture and recovery work
To use the option, select selfie confirmation and start the process. Center your face in the frame, then slowly turn your head right, left, up and down, following the on-screen instructions. Apple recommends even lighting, moving closer to the camera if needed, removing face coverings such as masks, hats or sunglasses, and keeping only your face in frame.
Apple’s instructions for confirming adulthood with a selfie also describe accessibility options, including spoken instructions, fewer directions and other adjustments. If the check fails, Apple advises checking the internet connection and trying again, or using another method such as a credit card or government-issued ID.
What Apple says happens to the selfie
Apple says its age-estimation models run on the device and on Private Cloud Compute, with the results combined on the device. Apple also says the selfie is inaccessible to anyone, including Apple, during analysis and is deleted after confirmation rather than retained.
A user can keep using the device without confirming adulthood, though some actions, such as downloading apps rated 18 or older or changing certain safety settings, may require confirmation. Apple says a successful confirmation does not need to be repeated for the covered Apple Account actions and services.
