At Apple’s Los Angeles showcase, Kyle Barr found the iPad mini (A20 Pro)’s OLED screen legible under the venue lights. At high volume, he also felt bass vibrations through the tablet. These were early impressions from a brief October 28 hands-on for Gizmodo.

What the first hands-on found

Apple says the 8.5-inch display fits within the previous iPad mini’s footprint, with bezels 24% thinner. The tablet is 5.4 mm thick. Barr reported that the slimmer bezels did not make it harder for him to hold, a useful practical detail for a small tablet meant to be carried and used in one hand.

The OLED display specifications

Apple lists a 2316 × 1512 resolution, a pixel density of 326 ppi and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. Its brightness figures describe different conditions:

Apple’s technical specifications give no refresh-rate figure for the built-in panel. GSMArena and PhoneArena report 60 Hz. The OLED screen is not the tandem OLED technology used in the latest iPad Pro models, and Barr did not directly compare the two displays.

Built-in refresh rate and external-display support

Apple lists support for one external display at up to 4K and 60 Hz, and says extended-display mode will be supported with iPadOS 27.2. The 60 Hz external-output figure applies to a monitor; it is separate from the reported 60 Hz refresh rate of the iPad mini’s built-in screen.

For someone who wants a compact device for notes or other work alongside a monitor, extended-display mode is the relevant capability. Apple’s published specifications set the external-display limit at one screen, up to 4K at 60 Hz.
