For an iPad mini (A17 Pro) owner, the announced iPad mini with A20 Pro is worth considering for its OLED display, lighter body, IP67 rating or newer wireless features. It is not an upgrade for a higher refresh rate or a longer advertised battery rating. Apple announced the new model on October 26, 2026, and scheduled availability to begin November 6.

NeoTeo covered the OLED iPad mini while it was still a rumor in its earlier report. Apple’s announcement names the A20 Pro chip and an 8.5-inch OLED display.

OLED improves contrast, but the screen stays at 60Hz

The A20 Pro model’s OLED screen brings pixel-level light control, deeper blacks and a 1-nit minimum brightness. Apple specifies 600 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, up to 1,200 nits peak brightness, and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. TechRepublic lists the A17 Pro model’s LCD at 500 nits for SDR.

For movies, photos and reading in a dim room, OLED and the 1-nit minimum are the clearest screen changes. But the refresh rate does not rise: TechRepublic lists both models at 60Hz. The A20 Pro model does not add ProMotion or 120Hz scrolling.

Apple also offers an optional nano-texture display to reduce glare in bright settings. The option is limited to 256GB and 512GB configurations, rather than the 128GB entry model.

A20 Pro brings Apple’s performance claims, with a storage-tier difference

Apple says the A20 Pro delivers up to 60% faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 2.7 times the graphics performance and up to 4.5 times the AI performance of the previous generation. Those are Apple’s comparisons. The chip has a seven-core GPU and up to a six-core CPU; Apple specifies a Dual 16-core Neural Engine in the 512GB model.

TechRepublic reports five CPU cores in the 128GB and 256GB configurations and six in the 512GB configuration. That makes storage choice relevant to the chip configuration as well as capacity. Both generations are offered in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options.

Lighter to carry, with newer wireless and an IP67 rating

TechRepublic lists the Wi-Fi A20 Pro model at 255g, compared with 293g for the Wi-Fi A17 Pro version. That is a 38g reduction. The new model is also 5.4mm thick, versus 6.3mm for the A17 Pro iPad mini.

Apple gives the new model an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. Apple says the rating comes from controlled tests at a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes, and that resistance can decrease with normal wear.

The A20 Pro model supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread through Apple’s N1 wireless chip. Its cellular configuration adds 5G, eSIM and a C2 modem. Apple claims the C2 enables cellular data speeds up to 50% faster than the previous iPad mini generation. Apple also moves the 12MP Center Stage front camera to the landscape edge, a more natural position for video calls when the tablet is horizontal.

The advertised battery rating is still up to 10 hours for both generations. TechRepublic reports that a compatible 35W-or-higher power adapter can charge the new model to about 50% in 30 minutes; the adapter is sold separately. Faster charging may help with a quick top-up, but it does not change the stated battery-life rating.

For an external monitor, Apple specifies that extended-display mode requires iPadOS 27.2.

U.S. prices and separate accessories

On October 26, Apple announced U.S. starting prices of $699 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model and $849 for the 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Apple also listed monthly payments for 12 months for each configuration.

ConfigurationU.S. starting priceListed payment for 12 months
128GB, Wi-Fi$699$58.25 per month
128GB, Wi-Fi + Cellular$849$70.75 per month

Apple lists the TechWoven Smart Folio at $79, Apple Pencil Pro at $129 and Apple Pencil (USB-C) at $79 in the U.S. Each is sold separately.

Who should upgrade?

  • Upgrade from the A17 Pro if OLED contrast, a lower minimum brightness, reduced carry weight, IP67 resistance or newer wireless standards would make a practical difference in your use.
  • Keep the A17 Pro if its LCD screen and performance meet your needs. The new model does not raise the listed 60Hz refresh rate or the advertised battery rating of up to 10 hours.
  • Buying your first iPad mini? The A20 Pro model is the one to consider if you want OLED, Wi-Fi 7 or the newer resistance rating. Its announced U.S. starting prices are $699 for Wi-Fi and $849 for Wi-Fi + Cellular, before separately priced accessories.
