The iPhone 18 Pro is the smaller, lighter, less expensive choice; the iPhone 18 Pro Max gives you a larger screen and higher Apple video-playback ratings. Both use the A20 Pro chip and the same camera hardware, so the decision comes down mainly to size, battery priorities, and whether the Max’s larger display is worth its higher price. At U.S. launch, the 256GB models were priced at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively.
How the two iPhone 18 Pro models compare
Apple lists a 6.3-inch display and a weight of 211 grams for the iPhone 18 Pro. The Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display and weighs 249 grams. That is 38 grams more to carry, along with a body that is 13.4 mm taller and 6.1 mm wider. Both are 8.75 mm thick.
| Factor | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Practical difference |
| Display | 6.3-inch OLED, 2,622 × 1,206 pixels | 6.9-inch OLED, 2,868 × 1,320 pixels | The Pro Max gives you more screen area; both displays have 460 pixels per inch. |
| Dimensions | 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm | 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm | The Pro Max is taller and wider, while thickness is the same. |
| Weight | 211 g | 249 g | The Pro Max weighs 38 g more. |
| Apple video-playback rating, U.S. eSIM-only models | Up to 36 hours | Up to 45 hours | Apple rates the Pro Max 9 hours higher. These are playback ratings, not a promise of everyday runtime. |
| Chip and cameras | A20 Pro; 48MP Pro Fusion rear camera system; 18MP Center Stage front camera | Same listed hardware | The Max does not have a different chip or camera system. |

Size and handling: the Pro is easier to carry
Choose the iPhone 18 Pro if a lighter phone and easier one-handed handling matter more than a larger screen. The Max’s 6.9-inch display gives you more room, but its 78 mm width and 249-gram weight may make it less comfortable to grip or carry in a pocket. AppleVis reviewer Michael Hansen described the Max as nearly unwieldy for him and said one-handed use was not really an option. That is his experience, not a universal fit test.
For reading, video, and other tasks that benefit from a larger screen, the Pro Max has the advantage in screen size. Its resolution is higher too, though both displays have the same listed pixel density of 460 ppi.
Battery life and charging depend on what you compare
For U.S. eSIM-only models, Apple rates video playback at up to 36 hours on the Pro and up to 45 hours on the Pro Max. The Pro Max’s rating is 9 hours higher. Apple also publishes ratings of up to 34 and 43 hours for physical-SIM configurations in its German announcement. Those figures describe a different configuration; U.S. models are eSIM-only, and eSIM service requires a supporting carrier and plan.
GSMArena reports that its tested Pro Max outlasted the Pro in every battery-test scenario, with its largest advantages in web browsing and 4G calls. The comparison also reports battery capacities of 4,288 mAh for eSIM-only Pro models and 5,567 mAh for eSIM-only Pro Max models. These capacity figures come from GSMArena, not Apple’s specifications.
GSMArena also reports that the Pro Max reached a full charge 7 minutes sooner in its comparison. At the 15-minute mark, it led by 12 percentage points; at 30 minutes, the lead was 13 percentage points. These are comparative results, not absolute charge times.

Cameras and performance: the core hardware is shared
Apple lists the same A20 Pro chip and camera system for both phones. The rear setup includes 48MP Fusion Main, 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and 48MP Fusion Telephoto cameras; the front camera is 18MP Center Stage.
GSMArena’s image comparisons report no meaningful difference between the two sizes in daylight, low light, selfies, or video. Its benchmark results were nearly identical within normal margin of error. In stress tests, the Pro Max had a modest sustained-performance advantage. For everyday use, the shared chip and camera hardware mean the larger model’s price is not buying a different camera setup or processor.
Speaker sound depends on what you listen to
GSMArena describes the Pro Max speakers as louder and fuller for music, with more prominent bass. Michael Hansen preferred the smaller Pro’s more natural sound for spoken audio, while preferring the Max for music. These are listening impressions, so the distinction matters most if you regularly use the phone’s speakers and know which kind of audio you care about more.
U.S. price and which model fits your priorities
At launch, Apple listed the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro for $1,199 and the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max for $1,299, a $100 premium for the Max. Those are Apple’s U.S. launch prices, not a statement of current retailer pricing. Apple’s launch announcement gives the matching prices.
Pick the iPhone 18 Pro if you value the lighter, narrower body, want the shared camera and chip, and would rather keep the $100 difference. Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max if the bigger screen and higher Apple playback rating are worth the extra weight and launch cost. If neither screen size nor battery rating changes your decision, the shared camera hardware and A20 Pro leave little reason to pay more for a different core setup.
