An October 25 report on iFixit’s teardown described a closing simulation in which a center support bar might not drop far enough, allowing it to press against the iPhone Duo’s folding display. The model points to a possible stress location near the central hinge support; the cause of reported screen cracks remains undetermined.
What owners have reported
Reports published October 23 described screen damage near the iPhone Duo’s hinge, sometimes accompanied by bright lines on the display. One Australian owner said the screen cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings, and that an Apple Store replaced the phone. The number of affected devices has not been established.
What iFixit’s hinge model proposes
iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge using teardown footage, patents and CT scans, then compared it with reported damage locations. Its analysis places a possible stress concentration near the gap for a crossing flex cable and the hinge’s central support.
The closing simulation adds a more specific possibility: a center support bar might fail to drop far enough as the phone closes, bringing it into contact with the curved display fold. That is a proposed mechanism, not a diagnosis of the reported failures.
In a separate dust test, fluorescent powder reached moving hinge parts and the hinge began crunching. iFixit reported less visible powder inside than in its comparable Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold tests. The dust test was not an IP certification test.
What separate stress tests show
AppleTrack’s destructive test sequence included bending, 1,000 folds, sand exposure and water exposure. The display failed during the sequence, but the test did not isolate which step triggered the damage.
CuriousHagi reported finding a broken loop-shaped hinge component in a device whose screen had first been damaged during forced stress testing. That single teardown does not explain the owner reports associated with ordinary use.
What the teardown says about repairability
iFixit gave the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10. It rated the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold 4 out of 10 each.
| Foldable phone | iFixit repairability score |
| iPhone Duo | 5/10, provisional |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | 4/10 |
| Pixel 11 Pro Fold | 4/10 |
iFixit said the Duo’s inner screen and hinge are difficult and costly to repair. Its score describes repairability, not how likely a device is to develop a fault.
