A couple of weeks ago we talked about the results published by PrivacyTests that evaluate privacy in web browsers, and one that stood out without much difficulty was LibreWolf. This Firefox fork aims to offer users more secure searches, a zero telemetry policy, and the blocking of anti-freedom features like DRM, without sacrificing compatibility or update frequency. Today we downloaded a copy, and here's what we found.

Web browsers must maintain a delicate balance between performance, security, and convenience for the user... but there is also data collection, and the generation of digital fingerprints. As we have said before, Big Data does not feed itself, and in the end, its goal is to make money change hands.

However, many users believe that collection is excessive, and they always look for more private alternatives. One that is making noise is LibreWolf, an independent Mozilla Firefox fork that obtained solid results in the PrivacyTests evaluation. What makes it different? Let's see...

LibreWolf always uses the latest stable build of Firefox as its base, but you will need to update it manually.

In terms of general functionality, LibreWolf hardly differs from Firefox, but we can highlight a cleaner interface and the presence of adblocking by default (remember to make an exception for us!). It responds very well both on metal and in virtual environments, and if you want to install extensions from the Mozilla store, you just have to go fetch them.

I found no problems installing Mozilla extensions.

The most important details are in its global feature list. LibreWolf deletes cookies when closing the browser, uses DuckDuckGo by default, removes tracking components from URLs, and activates different mechanisms to prevent or hinder the generation of digital fingerprints, such as blocking WebGL and IPv6. All autofill systems are disabled by default, there is no page cache on disk, and temporary files are purged along with cookies when LibreWolf closes.

Logically, a more private browsing profile also means losing access to specific resources. For example, LibreWolf does not support DRM, and that will likely affect services like streaming (Netflix, Disney Plus, etc.). However, I believe the browser deserves your attention, and I dare say it can already replace Firefox without major issues. Try it out!
