The Linux Foundation announced BUILD Foundation’s operational launch on October 14, 2026, naming ASML, Canva, Datadog, EngFlow, Figma, and Spotify as its six initial members. The fund is intended to support the Bazel ecosystem, with priorities ranging from maintainer funding to release security. (Linux Foundation announcement)
What BUILD Foundation plans to support
The Linux Foundation’s announced priorities span five areas:
- Technical writing and documentation.
- Funding maintainers of
bazel-contribrepositories. - Training and certification.
- IDE integration.
- Release attestations in the Bazel Central Registry, as part of supply-chain security work.
These are planned areas of support. The announcement describes the Foundation’s focus as Bazel and the surrounding build-at-scale ecosystem.
The launch followed an earlier formation phase
The Bazel team’s April 8, 2026 update described BUILD Foundation as a Linux Foundation Directed Fund. It said the Foundation had been announced at BazelCon in 2025 and was enrolling founding members. The same update said Google retained governance of Bazel’s core “kernel,” distinguishing that responsibility from the Foundation’s planned investment in the wider ecosystem.
