It all started as an isolated rumor. As the performance of the Radeon RX Vega cards and their potential with certain configuration tweaks became better known, the possibility of a Ti variant for the GeForce GTX 1070 gained traction. Leaks soon appeared, and today we have models from EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte, Zotac, and PNY. The GeForce GTX 1070 Ti is expected to hit store shelves on November 2. What can we expect from this hardware?
The Radeon RX Vega Aftermath
Here's the rumor control, here are the facts: The launch of the Radeon RX Vega cards left much to be desired. Performance-wise, there were few surprises (Vega 56 beats the 1070 in several games, and Vega 64 manages to trade blows with the 1080), but price and availability problems basically ruined the party. Add to that OEM delays in presenting custom-cooled versions, driver bugs, and the extensive overclocking and undervolting sessions Vega needs to achieve maximum efficiency. Nvidia watched all this from the other side, and its decision was to postpone the Volta architecture until next year. In the general market, the the GTX 1080 Ti is untouchable, and the standard 1080 has more than enough resources to contain Vega 64, but perhaps the GTX 1070 needs a little help...
… and so we arrive at the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti. This graphics card has sparked intense debate on the web. On one hand, many users are interested in getting similar performance to the GTX 1080 without making the full investment (between 500 and 550 dollars on the other side of the pond), and on the other, there are those who think it's unnecessary, because a price cut on the regular 1070 would be enough. Either way, the folks at Videocardz.com gained access to images from EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte, Zotac, and PNY. The models include reference coolers, and versions with two and three fans.
The specialized press is particularly fond of the Mini version that Zotac plans to launch. It's a very popular line that sacrifices almost nothing in performance or temperature, and users look for it to install in Mini ITX systems. The specs are more or less as we imagined: 2,432 cores, 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM, and a 256-bit bus, right between the 1070 and the 1080. Prices? For now, a mystery.
