The adventure of Microsoft PowerToys began with its original version for Windows 95. Many advanced configuration options were only available through Registry editing, and PowerToys simplified our lives greatly. Almost a quarter century later, Microsoft PowerToys returns with an edition for Windows 10. It is in preview phase, and doesn't have many parameters yet, but Redmond declared it open source, and its possibilities are enormous.
It's likely that Windows 95 would cause a nervous breakdown in new users if they tried it today, but back then we had to work with it one way or another, optimizing every element at our disposal. One of our most powerful allies was PowerToys, a package of tools that allowed us (among other things) to open CAB files as folders, extend AutoPlay to any CD, play an audio disc from the taskbar, open a DOS console more easily, and specify that window focus always follows the pointer.
The star of Microsoft PowerToys was Tweak UI, which modified much darker options in the operating system with direct Registry intervention. Tweak UI was vital to making Windows 95 more tolerable on old systems (386DX with 4 MB of RAM or similar) by disabling animations and effects. Microsoft officially discontinued PowerToys with Windows XP, but in May of this year it decided to bring it back, and today we have access to its first open source preview 0.11.0.
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows 10
The first high-profile function in PowerToys for Windows 10 is FancyZones, an extension of the "snap" that the operating system offers for organizing windows. Instead of being limited to Windows' automatic adjustment, FancyZones helps the user establish custom zones, starting from five predefined layouts (Focus, Columns, Rows, Grid, Grid with Priority) or creating one from scratch. It is also possible to choose the number of elements and the separation space between them. If you want more control when using FancyZones, hold down the Shift key while dragging a window.
The second function in PowerToys is a simple keyboard shortcut guide, which appears after pressing the Windows key for 900 milliseconds. Both the waiting interval and the window's opacity (default 90 percent) can be adjusted, but this doesn't allow editing shortcuts; it only presents information.
And that's all for now. Microsoft PowerToys for Windows 10 has a lot of work ahead, with a significant backlog of pending features. For example, FancyZones still has performance details that need to be fixed, and it needs a better editing system in multi-monitor configurations. I think it's worth keeping an eye on. If it manages to develop even a fraction of the potential we remember from the original PowerToys, it will be more than welcome on our PCs.
